004 Springfield XD-M, John Farnam

Our Producer Gail talks with John Farnam about his school, Defense Training International. some of his philosophy and the new Springfield XD-M Pistol. The conversation was recorded in May 2008 just before the new pistol debuted at the NRA show. We talked with John about the beginnings of his school and about an article on him in American Handgunner Magazine from 30 years ago by Mas. You can access that article here. Then some of the ProArms gang got together to talk about the Springfield XD-M pistol after putting it to the test on the range. Talking about the XD-M are Chris, Mike, John, Terri, Mas and Gail.

We documented some great groups with the XD-M. One addendum: the Black Hills brand 165 grain EXP ammo that Mas used to get that 25 yard group with four shots so tight, with three shots in one hole and one “called flyer,” is no longer being produced.

    I really enjoyed your podcast with John Farnam. I just wanted to mention one thing, that my XD-M has the ability to shoot without the magazine. It came to me like that straight from the factory, and I didn’t have to modify it in any way(removing a magazine safety for example). I was just wondering if your review sample was a post-production gun, and if John’s interview initiated Springfield’s removal of a post-production safety. I agree with Mr. Farnam that a gun without that ability is a deathtrap, and I was extremely happy when I test fired an XD-M and found it was able to fire without a magazine. I then ordered one and have had it for about a month, and it is by far one of the best shooters I’ve ever owned. Just wanted to know if the test gun and mine were flooks. Thanks, Matt

    I don’t think any XDs come with magazine safeties, I believe John was talking about Magazine disconnects in general in this interview. Something he feels very strongly about.
