017A Homing in on the Defensive Shotgun
It’s our last episode of the year and it is Magnum sized, so big that we had to divide it into two parts so be sure that you get both parts! (A double-barreled podcast, so to speak.) In response to lots of listener feedback and questions we thought that we would discuss the shotgun for home defense. We did a lot of shotgun shooting last week in an LFI class and we did some testing. We compared the use of the 12ga. vs. 20ga. shotgun for home defense with some commonly available and similar loads. Both shotguns were fired at a distance of seven yards from the target.
The first Picture is from a 20ga. shotgun loaded with #3 Buckshot:
Second picture is from a 12 ga. Shotgun loaded with #4 Buckshot:

The subject of the Taurus Judge came up in our discussion of the .410 load. This picture was also posted on the forum but it bears repeating here:
This pattern was fired at five feet from the Judge with a 2 ½” .410 birdshot cartridge.
Taurus Judge caught at the instant of discharge. Round is 2 ½” .410.
