032 Shooting Mirror Image

We shoot a match “mirror image” meaning that everything is done exactly opposite of what you usually do. In this case we were all right handed, meaning we had our holsters on the left and magazines on the right, revolver shooters had their speedloaders on the left since they usually carry them on their gun side. Hear the many reasons why we did it, and what we learned. 027 On The Road - At the ILEETA Conference

Another Episode from the road, This time at the ILEETA conference in Wheeling IL

We have 3 interviews. First we talk to Lou Ann Hamblin a police trainer who, we found out the next day after we did our interview, won the Iron Cop Competition. She discusses a couple of women Police Officers that she uses as examples of officer survival and staying in the fight. Below Are links to more information about them.

Next, we talk to the inventor of a new product the Train Safe a firearm barrel block that gives everyone visual evidence of a disabled firearm even with chamber closed. I thought this would be great for dry-fire practice and really would have come in handy in a class I recently attended where the instructor swept the entire class, he had checked his gun and I guess we were supposed to take his word for it because he stood by his technique even when called on his unsafe behavior. I don’t even like guns that I have checked myself to by pointed at any part of my body. A product like this could eliminate that problem.

Finally we talk to Ron Borsch who has researched Active-Killer shootings and analyzed the results, his conclusion is that 50% of these shootings are stopped by unarmed citizens and another 25% are stopped by armed citizens. He challenges the police department policies that prescribe that officers wait for orders before entering a building with an active-killing in progress. It is a very interesting discussion that although what he teaches is for police officers only, there are significant implications for the armed citizen. We include his handout with his permission.

026 A Pioneering Pundit, a Pistol Purveyor, and a Petite Powerhouse Potpourri

This week some of the ProArms Team is on the road gathering new and exciting interviews. So, we went into the file of choice interviews that we save for special occasions. We start off with a great interview Gail did with Tom Gresham last June when they were in Hannibal Mo, filming segments for Personal Defense TV.

Next we, we have recent interviews with two very special women. First you’ll meet Kate Krueger, who owns Derby Guns in Scottsdale, Arizona and has flourished in a world where gun shops are traditionally run by males. Finally, hear the inspiring story of 21-year-old Anna Gunter’s journey into both armed and unarmed combat skills, and how she, alone, backed down a gang of punks who approached her with obvious nefarious intent.

024 ProArms Training Tips.

Each member of the ProArms Podcast Team shares some of their training regimen with the listeners. There’s not too much text for this episode; first the links and then on to the videos. The targets you see Steve and Gail shoot are available at: RTKBA Targets The target Herman is shooting is the Optional USPSA Target from: Target Barn John talks about the CED7000 timer which most of us use is available here: CED timer The article Gail refers to is : Drills for the Public Range by Andy Kemp, who also offers excellent training in Illinois and Idaho.

Steve shows us how to trust our “wobble zone” in Shake, Rattle and Roll

Mike stresses how important is is to practice with your non-dominant hand.

Mas practices re-loading and maintaining sustained fire

Herman shows us how he practices a “Focus Drill”

Terri, who excels at distance shooting demonstrates her long range “Focus Drill”. In this video you can really see how she deals with being cross-eye dominant, she is right handed with a dominant left eye.

John demonstrates String three of the IDPA classifier.

Chris does the “Gunsite Drill” and a drill of his own.

Gail shows how we can adapt to practice/train on a public range.

021 Zombie Wars; Night of the Living Podcasters

With uncharacteristic whimsy, the ProArms Podcast team accepts Kenn Blanchard’s Zombie Challenge, a reminder to us all that we’re allowed to have fun with guns. Be sure to check out the embedded YouTube videos: some shooting was too visual for an audio format. Learn where to aim, how to tell a REAL zombie, and decide for yourself from example whether it’s best to shoot zombies with a suppressed Uzi, a shotgun, or a sidearm, or just throw your empty gun at ‘em, or bayonet the moldy things and be done with it! All live-fire shooting sequences are timed and unedited.

How Well did we do? It’s hard to see the shots so we have added red arrows to point them out. Here are ProArms Podcaster’s Targets from the first round, the “serious” Zombie shooting in alphabetical order:

020 TALKING TO THE INDUSTRY

Woo-hoo! Here’s our second and final podcast out of the 2009 SHOT Show in Orlando, Florida.

Good news: we got some GREAT, exclusive interviews with heavy hitters in the firearms world!

Listen to Scott O’Brien, head of Safariland’s combined products group, explaining why an era has ended and Bianchi holsters, that once competed with Safariland holsters, will now be “Bianchi by Safariland,” etc.

Listen to Charles Brown, speaking for Hi-Point, Charter Arms, and Chiappa explain where those manufacturers position those “entry level” guns, and why. (Hint: you’ll be surprised at how much of the market share Hi-Point holds.)

Listen to Justin Moon, designer of the Kahr pistol series and head of the company, tell the story of the Kahr product and introduce you to their new, ten-ounce, mini-.380 pistol.

…And, finally, listen to The Great One, multiple time world champion Rob Leatham, tell his own story as it has never been told before! Be prepared for gun advice from the World Champ that may shock you!

Bad news: we did the interviews amid a Tower of Babel of almost 50,000 people talking simultaneously in a convention center, with all sorts of electronic interference. Yes, you’ll be able to hear everything that was being said…but not, it won’t have the sound quality of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing in a studio.

018 Crimson Trace Laser Grips and Laser Sights Review

Finally we present our much awaited, much requested episode on Crimson Trace Laser Grips and Sights. We all use them for a variety of purposes and hope we can answer some of our listener questions here.

First we’ll start off with a link to Crimson Trace so you can see just what we are talking about: http://www.crimsontrace.com/

Chris Christian could not be with us on the day we recorded so we are posting what he had to say here:

Many shooters find that with just minimal practice the CTC sights can be instinctual to use in a stress situation. You know that I’m a well trained shooter, practice regularly, and am always among the Most Accurate at the one or two IDPA matches I shoot each month. I know what iron sights look like, and how to use them I also have CTCs on three “working” guns. The CTCs are zeroed, but I don’t practice with the lasers much at all ( I may go months without firing a single round with them).Virtually all my practice is with my iron sighted match guns. NOW.. WITH ALL THAT SAID… When I went through LFI 1 last year we did the video “Shoot/Don’t Shoot” drills. Steve’s J-frame (empty) with CTC was the gun we used. There is a significant degree of stress facing the video with the whole class watching. Your conscious mind is attempting to evaluate the situation and take the proper course of action. The first scenario I faced was the old fart with the crowbar at the back of the house who suddenly turns and charges you with it raised. It happens very fast! I quickly double tapped him in the upper COM (Sniper’s Triangle, Golden Triangle, whatever you want to call it). Steve commented ” Good hits.” I knew they were because I could see the laser. BUT I DO NOT CONSCIOUSLY REMEMBER SEEING THE IRON SIGHTS. When that threat materialized quickly, under stress, the gun was properly presented to the target and that bright red dot became my immediate sub-conscious focus point. It overrode years of iron sight training. It completely dominated my sub-conscious mind and the double tap hits were instinctive. If the laser had not been present I would have made hits with the iron sights… but not as fast, and not as accurately. My experience… and my opinion… is that a shooter with some level of training will bring the gun on target, and seek some degree of sight picture/sight alignment. If the laser isn’t visible due to light levels or background it is a non-factor, ignored by the sub-conscious, and iron sight training takes over. If the laser is brightly visible it seems to AUTOMATICALLY OVERRIDE that… sub-consciously… and becomes the focal point. And, it doesn’t seem to take a lot of training to have that occur. When things happen quick & close that bright red dot will drive the sub-conscious mind, Just a thought. Chris

First Video is Mas demonstrating how the Crimson Trace Lasers can be used for teaching and improving your own shooting.

012 Arizona Byways

The ProArms Podcast visits Arizona this week. First, Gail and two friends, Jon Hodoway and Kate Kreuger visit Robbie Barrkman of Robar. We get a wonderful tour of his plant, we got to see and play with lots of cool stuff and get the inside scoop for you on his coatings, especially NP3 as well as his other services. Gail had to practically drag Jon out of the plant so Robbie could get back to work.

While we didn’t record a podcast there a must see stop in Arizona for any shooter is the Scottsdale Gun Club. Gail and Jon Hodoway were given the deluxe tour there by Macy a very helpful employee of the club. It truly defies description.

In our second segment Gail talks with Mike Barham of Galco International. We talk about the company’s history and current and future product lines.

Finally we present a lecture given by Darrel Fretwell who had overcome some huge medical issues to become a champion shooter, and still remains on dialysis to this day.

008 All Girl Review!

The Girls take over the Podcast! Terri and Gail are your hostesses for this marathon Podcast . Gail once again takes her recorder on the road and she talks with three of the top female firearms trainers in the country.

First we talk to Vicki Farnam who is vice-president of Defense Training International and co-author of the books “Teaching Women to Shoot: A Law Enforcement Instructor’s Guide” and “Women Learning to Shoot: A Guide for Law Enforcement Officers “ We talk to Vicki about her popular class for men who teach women how to shoot.

Next we hear from Gila Hayes of The Firearms Academy of Seattle and The Armed Citizen’s Legal Defense Network. Gila is the author of “Effective Defense”, field editor for Women and Guns Magazine , and has published articles in numerous magazines. She talks to us about women buying that first gun among other things.

The last and longest of our interviews is with Kathy Jackson of the Cornered Cat website, a fountain of knowledge about firearms. Kathy is also the Managing Editor of Concealed Carry Magazine as well as an accomplished firearms instructor. We talk at length about women carrying a concealed weapon and methods of carry specific to the female. We also talk about a tragic accident where a little girl shot herself with her grandmother’s gun; you can read that story here. Kathy told a couple of other stories illustrating why carrying your gun in your purse is not a good idea, I have posted them in the “Episode Discussion” area for the ProArms Podcast at the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. Also, check over there for all the other Gun Rights Podcasts in our network.

This podcast is our longest yet but there was no way we could separate these three interviews, so enjoy.

Finally Terri gives us an update on the new ProArms store that she and her husband John are building in Live Oak, Florida. They are already selling guns and teaching classes even though right now they are working out of a tiny office.

Kathy Jackson shoots a perfect 300 in the LFI Qualifier. Kathy.jpg
